So if you are wondering if you could read this one as a standalone, yes you may but you would love it so much more with the background story. In fact, I change my mind-you should NOT read this without delving into the past books. It will really help you understand just what is going on and why it is all happening to Edie. The Shadows tell her that in order to get the help her Mother needs, she has to hunt down Santa Muerte for them. So many interesting things happen, so much terrific character growth happens, and there is even some real romance to this installment...with someone I did not expect!
